Back when I lived in New York, I loved sneaking away on little weekend adventures — especially around the holidays. In December 2006, I took a Christmas getaway to the cutest coastal town, Mystic, Connecticut, with my good friend and her young son. Traveling with them made the whole trip feel even more festive and fun — almost like we were in our own little holiday movie. And speaking of movies… stay tuned, because there’s a very famous Mystic film we crossed paths with later!
A Cozy Escape From the City
New York was buzzing with its usual holiday chaos, so arriving in Mystic felt instantly peaceful. The town was quiet, charming, and beautifully decorated — just what we all needed. After a nice little walk through the quaint streets — soaking in the fresh winter air and that nostalgic New England charm — we headed to our first stop: Mystic Aquarium.
Mystic Aquarium
The aquarium was such a fun and unexpected highlight of our trip. My friend’s son was absolutely delighted—especially watching the beluga whales glide gracefully through their icy-blue habitat. Even for adults, it felt magical. There’s something about visiting an aquarium in winter that makes the whole experience feel extra cozy and enchanting. We lingered by the tanks, chatted with staff, and enjoyed that warm, family-friendly atmosphere before continuing our holiday stroll through town.

A Tiny Bit of Mystic History
Before we wandered farther, I couldn’t help thinking about how charmingly old Mystic feels — and for good reason. The town has deep New England roots, going back to the 1600s. Even the spelling “Mistick” has history behind it.
The name comes from the Pequot1 word “Mistick,” meaning “great tidal river.” Early settlers adopted that spelling, and although the modern town is now spelled “Mystic,” the historic version lives on in places like Olde Mistick Village, which was named to honor the area’s original colonial-era spelling.
It’s one of those little details that makes Mystic feel like stepping back in time.
Olde Mistick Village in Full Holiday Spirit
Naturally, our next stop was Olde Mistick Village. With its colonial-style lanes and twinkling lights, it felt like a real-life Christmas village. We browsed the little shops, picked up a few gifts, and enjoyed the perfectly cozy holiday atmosphere. Every corner truly looked postcard-worthy.

A Little Slice of Hollywood: Mystic Pizza
And of course… we couldn’t leave without stumbling across the famous Mystic Pizza. Have you seen this 80s hit movie with a young Julia Roberts? If you have, you know exactly why I was so excited to find ourselves standing in front of the iconic pizzeria from the film. It felt like stepping right into a scene from the movie! That unexpected pop of Hollywood magic added such a fun, quirky twist to our already one of a kind getaway.

A Cozy Night at the Inn at Mystic
For our overnight stay, we checked into the Inn at Mystic, which felt like the perfect match for a December getaway. The property sits up on a hill with beautiful views, and even in winter it had that romantic New England charm — warm lights glowing in the windows, peaceful grounds, and a wonderfully welcoming atmosphere. After a full day of exploring, it was so nice to unwind in a quiet, comfy room and wake up to that crisp winter air drifting in from the river below. It truly completed the magic of our little Christmas escape.

A Touch of Maritime Christmas at Mystic Seaport
Another favorite stop of mine was Mystic Seaport. There’s just something magical about wandering past historic ships and weathered old buildings in the crisp winter air. Even without snow, the whole place felt like a quiet little chapter from a Christmas storybook. I loved the peacefulness of it—just the three of us exploring this timeless waterfront village, taking in that perfect blend of maritime history and holiday charm. It’s one of those spots that makes you slow down, breathe, and really soak in the moment.

The Perfect Little Holiday Reset
Looking back, that December trip with my friend and her son is still one of my favorite holiday memories from my New York years. Mystic gave us quiet streets, pretty lights, cozy cafés, enchanting aquarium moments, a sprinkle of history, a dash of movie magic, and that unforgettable small-town New England Christmas charm. It truly was the sweetest little holiday reset.
