With a full year of planning behind us, the Caribbean cruise adventure finally began as we stepped aboard the Norwegian Getaway, ready for a week of sun, friends, and unforgettable moments at sea. As the city faded behind us and the ship pulled away from port, it was impossible not to feel that familiar cruise magic: the sense of freedom, anticipation, and the promise of unforgettable days ahead in the Caribbean.

Tracing a loose loop through the western Caribbean, our route carried us south from New Orleans to Costa Maya (Mexico), Harvest Caye (Belize), Roatan (Honduras), and Cozumel (Mexico), before bringing us back home to New Orleans ā a journey that balanced discovery with easygoing days at sea.

Our first stop was Costa Maya, and it instantly felt like a meaningful one. With a few excursion options on the table, the group split ā some heading out on a catamaran to snorkel, others choosing to explore ancient history. It was my first time in Mexico, and seeing the famous Mayan ruins felt non-negotiable. Standing in front of those ancient structures, imagining the lives and stories theyāve witnessed, was quietly powerful. What made it even more special was that a few friends decided to swap their snorkeling plans and join me instead, turning it into a shared moment that felt just as memorable as the destination itself.

On our way back to the ship, the experience took on an almost surreal quality. We passed real-life splashes of color ā flamingos standing impossibly pink and parrots flashing bright feathers overhead ā mixed in with a few larger-than-life characters along the road. Men wearing dramatic masks and elaborate feathered costumes appeared out of nowhere, part performance, part spectacle, blurring the line between everyday life and celebration. It felt wonderfully chaotic and unmistakably Mexico ā one last burst of energy before returning to the calm rhythm of the ship.

From ancient pyramids and layers of history, we shifted effortlessly into full beach mode with a stop at Harvest Caye, Norwegian Cruise Lineās private island in Belize ā a picture-perfect day of turquoise water, soft sand, and the kind of relaxed island time that feels worlds away from stone temples and centuries past.

After a few blissfully fun and relaxing hours split between warm sand, clear sea, and plenty of delicious food, we decided to explore more of Harvest Caye beyond the beach. We wandered through the reptile terrarium, lingered in a flutter-filled butterfly garden, and strolled past several aviaries showcasing rescued birds of paradise. It was a gentle reminder that this island isnāt just about lounging ā itās also a small pocket of conservation and care, adding a thoughtful, unexpected layer to an already perfect day.

Back on the ship, we headed up to the higher decks to admire the view ā the sweeping, palm-lined shape of Harvest Caye slowly drifting farther away, looking even more beautiful from above. Before long, we slipped right back into the rhythm of ship life, rejoining our group for more laughs, shared plans, and whatever fun activity came next.

Approaching RoatĆ”n, the water shifted to impossibly clear shades of blue, hinting at the adventures ahead. This was our most action-filled day by far ā and one of my favorites. I went zip-lining for the first time in my life, equal parts nerves and exhilaration as we flew above the jungle canopy. From there, the day softened into pure joy: playing with tiny monkeys, holding gentle sloths, and finally slipping into the sea to snorkel above a stunning coral reef, colorful fish darting below us. It felt like one unforgettable moment stacked perfectly on top of the next.

Our final day ashore brought us to Cozumel, where we chose what turned out to be the most incredible experience of the entire trip ā swimming with dolphins at Dolphinaris Cozumel. One of my friends had done it on a cruise the year before and couldnāt recommend it highly enough, and we were so grateful we followed her advice. Being in the water with dolphins, feeling their curiosity and gentle intelligence up close, was genuinely moving. They are the most wonderful creatures, and the experience felt less like an excursion and more like a moment of pure connection ā a perfect, unforgettable way to close out our time on land.

One of the things we really appreciated onboard was Freestyle Dining with Norwegian Cruise Line. Instead of fixed dining times and assigned tables, you can choose where and when you want to eat, which fit perfectly with our groupās different plans and energy levels. The specialty restaurants ā the fancier spots ā do require reservations, especially if youāre traveling with a larger group, but otherwise thereās a relaxed, no-pressure flow to it all. It made dinners feel flexible and spontaneous rather than scheduled, which somehow made the whole experience feel even more like a true vacation.

And then there were the parties ā the kind that blur the line between ājust one more songā and suddenly realizing itās 2 a.m. We danced on the disco floor until our feet hurt, and on other nights squeezed into one of our cabins for our own private little after-party, music playing, laughter echoing down the hallway. It truly was a trip like no other, the kind you talk about long after youāre home. Iām especially grateful to my friend ā the pretty blonde in the middle of the first photo below ā who organized the entire adventure and made it all happen. Thank you so much, Angelica! Hereās hoping weāll be back on another ship together very soon. š¢āØ

As the ship turned back toward New Orleans, the pace naturally slowed, giving us space to take it all in. Days at sea became about shared meals, sun-soaked decks, spontaneous laughter, and quiet moments watching the horizon drift by. It was impossible not to feel grateful ā for a trip imagined a year earlier finally coming to life, for adventures that pushed me out of my comfort zone, and for the simple joy of experiencing it all with people I care about. From ancient ruins and wild jungles to coral reefs and curious dolphins, this cruise was a reminder of how expansive the world feels when you let yourself fully step into it ā and how travel, at its best, leaves you both exhilarated and gently changed.
